Technology is a fundamental component of university life, and is particularly important to the delivery of instruction and the learning experience. AccessibilityThe Web Accessibility Guidelines are an effort to make the University's Web site and pages more accessible to not only those with disabilities but any person who visits or interacts with our web site. The standards and the guidelines are to serve as a framework to help the individuals who are responsible for publishing any content on the university web site be in compliance with the 1998 Section 508 amendments to the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. http://it.nku.edu/faculty/webservices/accessibility/index.php AccountsAll students enrolled at Northern Kentucky University, as well as all University employees, are provided with a user account for network login, email, file storage and web space for University related purposes. In order for an account to be created, faculty and staff must visit Human Resources, students must visit the Registrar's Office and be successfully registered for classes. Also, a student/staff/faculty ID card must be obtained from the All-Card Office to be able to access this account. Once these requirements are met, the account will be automatically created and should be accessible within three business days. Anti-VirusAntivirus software is one of the most important tools for safe-guarding your computer, vital information, and personal data from the daily onslaught of viruses and worms. Without antivirus protection, your computer may be left completely defenseless against these attacks. Antivirus software is available from both commercial and free sources. Apple Purchase ProgramNKU is affiliated with the Apple Store so students can purchase Apple products, including IPhones, IPods and Mac computers, at a discount. BBlackboardBlackboard is a web portal that offers you easy access to course materials and university resources. To use Blackboard, you must be a student registered at Northern Kentucky University and have a computer with Internet access. IT has a specialized section for Blackboard Resources for students. Additionally Blackboard training is available for faculty. CCalendarsNorthern Kentucky University maintains calendars for both academics, athletics and campus events. Cincinnati Bell Phone DirectoryThe 2008/2009 Cincinnati Bell Yellow and White Pages online are now available. Search the White and Yellow Pages listings, area businesses and government listings. Help NKU cut down on paper waste while enjoying the fast and user-friendly access that the Cincinnati Bell Yellow and White Pages online provides. Classroom TechnologyWe are dedicated to continuous improvement of educational and classroom technology, through innovative instructional software, video streaming, collaboration tools, and instructional delivery. NKU uses Blackboard to enrich the learning experience. Computer LabsThe NKU IT department supports 71 computer labs across campus for students to use, including open computer labs, labs by reservations and department computer labs. Both PCs and Macs are available with printers. Computer OperationsComputer Operations is handled by the Infrastructure team. The Computer Operations group is responsible for scheduling and monitoring the execution of all centrally managed systems residing within the University’s Network Operations Center (NOC). Copyright and File SharingAll copyrighted information, such as text and images, retrieved from electronic resources or stored, transmitted or maintained with electronic resources, must be used in conformance with applicable copyright and other laws. Copied material, used legally, must be properly attributed in conformance with applicable legal and professional standards. DDell Purchase ProgramDell U offers discounted purchases of computers and equipment for students, faculty and staff of NKU. New is Dell Lounge, where you'll have access to exclusive content covering music, style, gaming and more. Digital Media (see Media Production)Faculty can host videos and other digital media on our videos website. They can be accessed from this site or the link can be embedded into Blackboard for viewing by students. Dorm Move-In SheetIf you are a dormitory resident you have access and usage privileges to the NKU data network. This document will provide guidelines about policies and procedures. Please refer to the Acceptable Use Policy for more comprehensive information. Download Anti-VirusNKU offers Microsoft Forefront Antivirus software for Windows based PCs free of charge to students currently enrolled in courses. There are additional companies that provide free anti-virus software for non-commercial use. EEducation/TrainingTechnology education is provided to faculty/staff and students on a variety of subjects. As an NKU employee or student, you are provided an NKU e-mail address by the university. This address is used by most academic and administrative offices to send you messages. All information related to your e-mail account should be considered confidential and never shared. In addition, the Office of Information Technology will never ask you to provide your e-mail/account password. Such requests should be considered “phishing” attacks and reported immediately the NKU IT Service Center. At no time should you honor such a request. Email Listserv Subscription (see also Mailing Lists)NKU maintains several public mailing lists. You can view the list, subscribe, change your setting or unsubscribe to these lists. Email QuotasFaculty/Staff: Default messaging quotas are a "360 MB Warning" and a "400 MB Maximum." The purpose of the 360 MB warning message is to allow users time to review message directories and clean up mail before reaching the "400 MB Maximum Quota." Once the "400 MB Maximum Quota" has been reached, a user will be unable to send messages until the message consumption is reduced. Reaching the "360/400 MB Maximum Quota" limits will inhibit the sending of messages by the user, but will not inhibit the receipt of any new mail unless 400 MB Inhibit Receipt Quota" that has been enabled for all users. Students: Default messaging quotas are a "25 MB Warning" and a "30 MB Maximum." The purpose of the 25 MB warning message is to allow users time to review message directories and clean up mail before reaching the "30 MB Maximum Quota." Once the "30 MB Maximum Quota" has been reached, a user will be unable to send messages until the message consumption is reduced. Reaching the "25/30 MB Maximum Quota" limits will inhibit the sending of messages by the user, but will not inhibit the receipt of any new mail unless the user exceeds the "30 MB Inhibit Receipt Quota" that has been enabled for all users. NOTE: It is the responsibility of each user to review his or her email usage and perform periodic clean up. The Office of Information Technology recommends the use of archival or offline personal folders for the retention of messages not designated as critical. Messages with large attachments should also be reviewed for possible storage in offline personal folders. FFaculty WebpagesFaculty web pages can be built using Joomla as a CMS. A modified template will be provided or the web editor can build a customized template. The faculty web-space will be used. Mobile ComputingWith the ever-increasing use of mobile devices, IT is partnering with the Infrastructure Management Institute to develop mobile applications to enhance our students' experience here at NKU. myNKUMyNKU is our new one-stop system for class registration, financial aid awards, bill payment, and employee benefits and payment information. It uses SAP and is replacing the Norse Express system. NNetworkNKU’s network is maintained by the Infrastructure team, and consists of a wired and wireless system. All the buildings are linked through a fiber based networked, while remote locations are connected via point to point connections. NKU currently has a 1 GB connection to other state university systems and a 200 MB connection to the Internet. These are available to both students and educators. Operating SystemNKU supports many operating systems, from a server perspective, Windows 2003, 2008, Linux, and AIX are the most common, and from a client prospective, Windows XP and Mac OSX are the most common. NKU IT is working with the newest operating systems to verify software compatibility. For security reasons, faculty and staff Windows computers are automatically updated with the latest patches. If you are connecting with a personal computer or an Apple, please keep your operating system up to date with the latest critical and security patches. PPart-time JobsPart-time jobs are available for students, up to 25 hours during the school year. Some programs also have work study available. Many provide valuable experience within your major. Smart ClassroomNKU currently has more than 230 Smart Classrooms campus wide that are equipped with audio/video presentation technology. NKU has made a commitment to upgrading the instructional technology installed in the classrooms on a continuing basis. Every effort has been made to standardize the equipment in the Smart Classrooms. However, individual department needs and advancing technology require flexibility in system configurations. Faculty and Staff have a default of 1 GB WebmailNKU's Web-Based Email Access is a Web-based email client that allows you to access your email using a Web browser from anywhere in the world. You can use Web-based email access to read, send and manage your email with one easy-to-use interface. Online access to e-mail accounts can be found at webmail.nku.edu. E-mail client training and tutorials: WimbaWimba is an application used within Blackboard to allow an instructor to record and interactively playback a lecture to conduct a class online. Hands-on instructor led training is available at http://it.nku.edu/faculty/training.php. Wireless ConfigurationNKU currently offers 2 wireless access SSID’s, NKU and NKU_Village. To connect to these SSID’s please use you wireless connection wizard and connect. NKU is in the process of creating a new wireless SSID that will introduce additional security to the wireless network.
