White House develops cyberspace policy review

“The President directed a 60-day, comprehensive, “clean-slate” review to assess U.S. policies and structures for cybersecurity. Cybersecurity policy includes strategy, policy, and standards regarding the security of and operations in cyberspace, and encompasses the full range of threat reduction, vulnerability reduction, deterrence, international engagement, incident response, resiliency, and recovery policies and activities, including computer network operations, information assurance, law enforcement, diplomacy, military, and intelligence missions as they relate to the security and stability of the global information and communications infrastructure” (Cyberspace Policy Review, 2009). Seven areas were outlined for national focus, which will be directed toward business, academia, and all government agencies to increase awareness, progress and reduction in global cybersecurity threats.

The NKU Office of Information Technology has adopted the concept of an IT Service Catalog.  This approach demonstrates our continued effort to follow industry best practices.  IT Service Catalogs are part of the ITIL standards and this is an important step for NKU OIT with regards to providing service across campus.  Please take a look at the new service catalog at http://it.nku.edu in the lower right corner.  This applies to students, faculty and staff.  Please send any feedback to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Did you know that NKU is upgrading its voicemail system during fall break? The new version of the voicemail software will enable you to receive voicemails as e-mails, but still be able to access your voicemail by dialing 5800. The messages, though, will now be stored within your e-mail account, which means you can listen to messages via your computer or blackberry. More information about this project will soon be available at it.nku.edu.

Microsoft Office Communicator
Have you wondered what it would be like to have a campus instant messenger? It’s possible you’ll find out soon what it’s like. Currently the Office of Information Technology is beta testing software called Microsoft Office Communicator. This software is an instant messaging client that is managed centrally on campus to provide secure communications, and allow video conferencing between campus computers and computers off campus.

Accounts for Microsoft Office Communicator will be automatically created during the normal account creation process. If you are interested in participating in the beta testing, e-mail Doug Wells at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

The Schedule of Classes is new and improved. Check out the new functionality allowing you to select multiple disciplines when searching for courses. Although this web view available off of ‘Quick Links’ is primarily geared to prospective or transfer students we know many on campus use it as well as the course search available within myNKU.
