These are a sampling of some of the projects that the Office of Information Technology is currently working on. To learn more about each project, click on the tabs below. THIS SUMMER & FALLFACULTY & STAFF DIRECTORYThis fall, research and development will complete its user-friendly faculty and staff directory interface for the NKU website. This will enable various departments on campus to achieve the same look and feel as the College of Informatics faculty and staff directories online. MICROSOFT FOREFRONT ANTIVIRUSThis fall, information technology will make Microsoft Forefront AntiVirus software available to all NKU students. This will be the first time NKU has offered free antivirus software. COST TO ATTEND – NKU CALCULATORThis summer, research and development will have another online asset for prospective and current students, the cost to attend – NKU calculator. This calculator will compare private and public universities’ charges and allow each individual to estimate his or her own expenses at NKU. COMPUTER REPLACEMENT ORDER SYSTEMThis fall, faculty and staff will no longer have to submit paper order forms for computer replacements; all orders will be processed online. Information Technology Solutions Center and research and development, have paired up and created an online experience that will not only allow you to select your replacement computer but also to customize it. Find out more about the computer replacement project. myNKU MILESTONES (GO LIVES)As the campus management implementation of myNKU wraps up in 2009, finance and human resources will continue to launch additional functionalities.
UNIFIED MESSAGINGNear the end of summer, NKU will have unified messaging, which allows users to receive voicemails via e-mail. The perks: unified messaging increases reachability and requires no hardware! WIRELESS IN STUDENT HOUSINGIn the fall, the infrastructure department will finish putting wireless Internet access in all student housing. The housing will have more than 100 wireless access points, which means denser coverage and a better connection speed. THIS WINTER & NEXT YEARONLINE ORIENTATION PROJECTResearch and development is currently working on an online orientation project for the Office of New Student Orientation and Parent Programs. Once the project is complete, undergraduate transfer students and international students that are unable to attend Northern Exposure (the new-student orientation on campus) can go online for orientation. STUDENT E-MAIL FOR LIFECurrently, NKU has almost 27,000 student e-mail accounts – 15,000 belong to current students; the rest belong to graduates or students who’ve been enrolled at NKU within the past year. Generally, one year after students leave NKU, these student e-mail accounts are deleted. Not anymore! This winter, the infrastructure department will make student e-mail accounts last a lifetime. By providing student e-mail for life, NKU is able to provide communication for alumni and keep its name afloat. TESTING SERVICESResearch and development is investigating software for the bursar's office that will enable students to pay online for tests (at NKU). This new service should be available next year. VIDEO SOLUTIONIn an effort to make 2008's interim video solution a comprehensive one, a sub-team of the Information Technology Assessment Committee has been working with information technology and the technology support staff of the College of Informatics to provide more video options and opportunities for NKU faculty and staff. The goals for the new video solution include: providing faculty and staff with the opportunity to create their own videos (capturing footage of lectures and guest speakers), edit video content, and host classes online. A new solution should be in place by next year. WEB REBUILDThe web rebuild project will be complete in fall 2009. All academic and administrative NKU sites will be finished. |
